The Potter's Heron, Ampfield – Access Statement
Introduction
The Potter’s Heron is a well-known, landmark hotel and pub located on Winchester Road in Ampfield, near Chandler’s Ford and Romsey in Hampshire, England. With 58 bedrooms it is distinguished by its large thatched roof, which was built in 1937. Recently refurbished to a four-star standard of accommodation and with a pub and restaurant in keeping with Heartwood Inns.

The Inn is located on Hook road or Winchester Road. Taxis can be ordered from the Inn and our Team are pleased to help with this.
Arrival & car parking facilities
A large car park with up to 103 spaces at the front and rear of the Inn, accessed off Winchester Road or Hook Road. This is a tarmac surface with clearly marked bays.
There are 4 accessible parking bays at the front of the pub.
We do not reserve car parking spaces, they are provided on a first come, first served basis.
Main entrance
The main entrance to the Inn is at ground floor level, at the front of the building.
There is a separate entrance to the left of the building for checked-in residents which opens outwards and can be activated by a push button system.
Alternative entrance
There is a second pedestrian entrance to the property to the left of the building, guests wishing to avoid steps are able to access check-in for rooms on the lower with no steps using this entrance.
Staff are always on duty to assist if required and, as a minimum, will be located at the restaurant host stand and main bar.
Registration
Guests who have booked overnight accommodation can register at the Check In Station, located 65ft to the left of the main bar within the Inn, or we can complete the registration process at a table.
Our registration process is paperless and is completed on one of our portable tablets.
Room keys are available as a credit card size plastic key. This will provide access to your bedroom and any other door required to give access to your room.
The Ground Floor & Lower Ground Floor
The Pub is located on the ground floor, level access is provided to the pub area and some dining. A majority of dining is located on a lower ground floor, with 7 steps down from ground level. There is level access fire exit from lower ground floor dining to street level in case of emergency.
Floor surfaces vary between ceramic tile and timber.
There is matting in the exit doorways.
Seating is available in various spaces around the bar and restaurant.
We are dog friendly and allow dogs in the bar. Assistance Dogs are welcome in the restaurant area whereas unfortunately pets are not permitted.
Background music is played continually at low volume.
There is ample space in which to move around and seating can be moved to accommodate as necessary.
Waiter service is offered throughout the lower ground floor and specific dietary needs are catered for. Room service is not provided.
A ‘no smoking’ policy is in effect throughout. This policy includes the smoking of e-cigarettes and any such similar devices as well as all other tobacco products.
Baby changing facilities are available in the Accessible Toilets.
Toilet facilities
There are ladies, gentlemen’s and accessible toilets on the ground floor, situated towards the left of the pub area.
There are two accessible toilets. One is located on the ground floor and one on the lower ground floor, towards the left of the pub area and has a ceramic tiled floor, emergency pull cord and baby changing facilities. Support rails are situated in the Disabled Access Toilet.
Coat hooks are provided however guests are responsible for the safety of their belongings.
Bedrooms
There are 58 bedrooms at the Inn, our 2 accessible bedrooms are located on the lower ground floor. Level access is provided to this room.
There are 28 bedrooms on the lower ground floor, accessed by 8 steps from ground to lower ground.
There are 4 bedrooms on the ground floor, accessed by 8 steps from the lower ground floor.
There are 24 bedrooms on the second floor, accessed by 6 steps from the ground floor.
All other bedrooms are carpeted with wood effect bathroom floors. Some, but not all, beds can be either doubles or twins.
All bedrooms have seating, desks, cordless kettles, irons and boards, televisions with casting solution and telephones.
There is a safe in each room and a fridge in which we provide bottled water and milk.
Our menus cater for specific dietary requirements.
Well behaved dogs and assistance dogs are welcome.
If advised of assistance being required in the event of an emergency, a staff member will knock on the bedroom door to assist with any evacuation.
All bedrooms are designated as non-smoking areas. This policy includes the smoking of e-cigarettes and any such similar devices as well as all other tobacco products.
Bathrooms, shower-rooms and WC:
All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms which, due to the age of the building, vary in shape and size. All bathrooms have a walk in shower with a small step for access. Some bathrooms have a bath tub as well as a shower.
We have details of each room and can assist with specific requirements.
Patio area / external seating
There is an external patio seating area at the front of the Inn. Pedestrian access is gained from the car park.
There is ample space in which to move around.
Waiter service is offered throughout and specific dietary needs are catered for.
Fire Alarm
The Inn has a fully audible fire alarm with sounders positioned around the building. In the event of the alarm being triggered you are asked to evacuate the building to the fire assembly point.
The alarm can be raised at the break glass points positioned around the building or by contacting a member of the Inn Team.
A portable “deafguard” system is available from our Host station should you be hard of hearing.
The fire alarm is tested weekly, usually on a Tuesday morning.
