Originally built in 1937, The Potter’s Heron is a much‑loved thatched pub with a unique place in British literary history.

With Ampfield most famously known as the birthplace of Wilbert Awdry, creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, the pub has a special connection to generations of readers and families.

Our Pub

Our recent refurbishment has been thoughtfully carried out to preserve the character and charm of this iconic building, while introducing Heartwood Inns’ signature warm, relaxed style.

The result is a pub that feels both timeless and welcoming – a true local at heart, ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.

We take pride in our reputation for serving high-quality, seasonal food alongside meticulously crafted pints, a thoughtfully curated wine selection, and an enticing array of cocktails.

A number of rooms are ideal for family stays and dog-friendly too. We even have a dog shower for your muddy four-legged companions.
