The History of The Potter’s Heron, Our Historic Pub in Ampfield, Hampshire
Originally built in 1937, The Potter’s Heron is a much‑loved thatched pub in Ampfield with a unique place in British literary history.
Most famously, it is known as the birthplace of Wilbert Awdry, creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, giving the pub a special connection to generations of readers and families.

We take pride in our reputation for serving high-quality, seasonal food alongside meticulously crafted pints, a thoughtfully curated wine selection, and an enticing array of cocktails.
Feel free to bring along your furry friend too… just let us know so we can reserve a table in our dog-friendly area. Rest assured, water and treats are on the house for our beloved canine companions.
